Ramadan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur'an as a guide to mankind also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (between right and wrong). So everyone of you who is present (at his home) during that month should spent it in fasting, but if anyone is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period (should be made up) by days later. Allah intends every facility for you He does not want to put you to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period, and to glorify Him in that He has guided you; and perchance ye shall be grateful. Ramadan takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, the month in which the Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammed. It is the Islamic month of fasting, in which participating Muslims do not eat or drink anything from dawn until sunset. The Muslim year is a lunar (moon) year, so Ramadan moves forward by 10 or 11 days each year. Muslims believe fasting teaches a person patience, sacrifice and humility. During Ramadan, Muslims ask forgiveness for past sins, pray for guidance and help in refraining from everyday evils, and try to purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds. |
